There are some things that are absolutely necessary for raising an infant. Diapers, for one. Infant cribs and baby highchairs, to name a couple more. But the real trick is being able to look at the things everyone TELLS you you'll need, swears you'll need, will guarantee you won't know how you survived without it, and be able to see through the baby-buyer-propaganda and realize that these items are really not necessary at all for new parents.

For example, most infant stores will offer things called "infant positioners," which leads to the obvious question: do you truly need a specific device to properly position your infant? These devices, designed to fit in infant cribs or changing tables, are basically nothing more than pillows with holes in them. Why not save yourself the time (not to mention, the money) and just use any old pillow? We guarantee you're child won't know the difference, and if you meet an owner of an infant positioner, in all likelihood they don't know the difference either.

There are also products called "exersaucers," which are stationary play centers. Yeah, we know, the name sounds like some sort of kitchen cooking appliance mixed with an alien spaceship."Exersaucers" are actually stationary play centers designed for children not yet able to function properly on their own two feet. And while they may appear to be great fun for your child due to the ridiculously high numbers of buttons and gadgets present on the device, some studies have found most exersaucers to be over-stimulating for most young children.

Now on the flip side, there are a plethora of products one must 100% absolutely, positively have. And while a lot of those are "gimmes," like baby highchairs and infant cribs, there are some that surprisingly slip the mind of many parents.

One of the most underrated and often forgotten infant item is the car seat. Many parents believe a car seat isn't necessary until the baby is a few months old, which couldn't be further from the truth. How do you get the child home from the hospital in the first place? While every parent knows the first natural instinct is to hold your newborn throughout the drive (and 24/7 from that point on), this is actually extraordinarily dangerous, and you'll be doing the safe thing for yourself and your offspring by getting the proper baby seat before the birth occurs.

Additionally, while no one likes to talk about it, the reality is that a young infant is a very vulnerable being, and unfortunately a return trip to the hospital is sometimes necessary. In case of these emergencies, it's important to always have a baby seat ready and able, regardless of whether you think you'll be needing it in the near future.
